There are 600,000 deaths from heart disease in the U.S. every year- That’s 1 in every 4 deaths!  It affects both men and woman equally and according to Center for Disease Control, 935,000 Americans suffer from a heart attack every year. There are many exciting studies about dark chocolate lowering your risk of heart disease. Doctors at the University of Cambridge carried out a review of 7 large scale chocolate studies involving over 100,000 participants. They found that the highest levels of chocolate consumption were associated with a 37% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in stroke compared with the lowest levels of chocolate consumption. That bears repeating: Eating dark chocolate on a regular basis can lower your risk of heart disease by 37%!!

This is great news, but keep in mind not all chocolate is created equal- Make sure to choose a minimum of 60% dark chocolate or above.  A rule of thumb is the darker the better. In terms of heart health you’ll want to stay away from white chocolate which doesn’t contain any of the heart protective flavanol antioxidants. You’ll also want to avoid milk chocolate, which is made with processed milk powder and negates the benefits of the antioxidants. To get the maximum amount of benefits you’ll also want to choose a chocolate with no refined sugar and made with RAW cacao. Since raw chocolate is unroasted and less processed you get the greatest amount of flavanol antioxidants, in their most natural & pure form. Tests have shown that highly processed cacao contains up to 50% LESS antioxidants.
