Is Chocolate More Effective Than Cough Syrup?
Temperatures have been dropping in the Bay Area and it’s really starting to feel like winter! The change of the seasons and drop in temperature is hard on our bodies and that’s when many people get sick. When we get a bad cough many of us turn to cough syrup. Common cough syrups contain codeine which is a narcotic and lists drowsiness and constipation among its negative effects. Cough syrups also commonly contain artificial flavors, D&C red no. 33, FD&C red no. 40 (food coloring), sodium benzoate (preservative, believed by some to cause cancer when consumed regularly over time) and high fructose corn syrup!
Well, we have GREAT news; a British study found that there might be a more fun, nutritious & delicious way to get some relief! Scientists at the Imperial College of London studied the effectiveness of theobromine vs. codeine at suppressing coughing. Theobromine is one of the major compounds found in cacao. The scientists had the unlucky study participants inhale chili gas, which is a common method of testing the effectiveness of cough medicines. What the scientists found is that those given theobromine needed a third more chili gas to induce coughing than those who took codeine. Aside from theobromine being more effective than codeine at suppressing coughing, the scientists also noted that theobromine had no noticeable side effects.
Next time you have a cough why not talk to your doctor and consider adding a little cacao powder or dark chocolate into your life. Let us know how it works for you. Either Way it will make life feel a whole lot sweeter.
